A DEEP DIVE INTO: ROSES

We love a garden rose for her fragrance, romance, and movement, and a standard rose for her reliability and form. Some varieties open wide and wild, with single petals and the vase life to prove she’s the epitome of luxury. Others hold a tighter shape, with centers like little cabbages and smell like apples or citrus.

They’re doing a lot of heavy lifting in a design, and they know it. And when they’re good they’re really good.

A few things to know when working with Roses

Guard petals are your friend (until they’re not)

1

Those outer petals can look bruised or tired, but they’re protecting the bloom during transit. Don’t be afraid to gently remove them, what’s underneath is usually perfect.

Hydration is everything

2

Roses are thirsty. A fresh cut and deep water on arrival makes a huge difference. If they’re ever looking a little soft, a hard recut and a long drink might bring them back.

Strip the foliage

3

Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line. This keeps bacteria down and extends vase life significantly.

Cooler storage = longevity

4

Roses store beautifully in the cooler. Keep them hydrated, give them space for airflow, and they’ll hold well for several days. Some varieties can go even longer when handled properly.

Feed me, Seymour!

Using a proper solution (like HydraFlor or similar) will noticeably extend vase life and help blooms open more evenly.
